Het ontsnapte land

( graduation project )

A visual essay about time.

Like everything around us, landscapes change during time. Geert Mak traveled in a small boat through the west of Holland. The same journey his uncle made in 1912. In his essay ‘Het ontsnapte land’ he writes about the landscape of today and that of the past. About the similarities and the differences.

One of the major things he notices is the lack of almost every kind of decay. There are no old railway bridges that became out of use, no abandoned farms of ruins that tell a story about history, the people and the culture. We fight time. All that is left is maintained without any sign of time. There is almost nothing that gets the time to perish, to rot, to go old.

In a visual essay, I want to tell the story of time. Using the beauty of the old, and combining this with photos of today, a new image is formed. A story about the past and nowadays, the city and the countryside, changing landscapes, culture and habits, different times and places that nearly changed.
